How does PRF Plasmatherapy work?

Platelet Rich Fibrin, or PRF, is a powerful concentrate of your cells. PRF is used as a natural alternative to synthetic solutions to improve skin quality and restore hair growth. First, a small amount of blood is drawn. Second, the blood is spun in a centrifuge at a specific low speed that maximizes the separation of plasma with all the growth factors and other beneficial cells, creating PRF. 

Then, PRF is ready to be used topically during microneedling or injected directly into the skin. Clinical studies have shown that adding PRF to microneedling produces thicker and stronger new collagen fibers. PRF can also be converted to a gel-like form and used as an organic filler alternative for the under-eye area, smile lines, and lips. Hair loss treatment involves PRF injected into the scalp, which nourishes the hair follicles and encourages the growth of healthy, thicker hair.

How does PRF compare to PRP?

PRF has several key advantages:

Are PRF treatments painful?

Most people experience mild to zero discomfort when PRF is injected or used with microneedling. A topical anesthetic is typically applied 25 minutes before the procedure. No anesthetic is used when scalp injections are done. However, your provider will use other measures to ensure your comfort.

Am I a candidate for PRF Plasmatherapy?

PRF via injections or microneedling is suitable for all skin types and can address multiple concerns such as aging, sun damage, dark under-eye circles, and thinning hair. The contraindications include active acne breakout, active cold sores, any other open lesions or wounds, active infection, moderate to severe eczema or psoriasis, scleroderma, severe keloidal tendencies, or any other active inflammatory or autoimmune processes.

How long is the downtime?

Downtime is minimal. Your face might be reddened and tender for about 1-3 days after the treatment. We recommend avoiding makeup for about 24 hours after your procedure. After that, using gentle skin care and daily sunscreen is advised. For scalp treatment, we recommend not to wash your hair for 12-24 hours if possible. After that, you can resume shampooing the hair and using agents such as Rogaine (minoxidil.)  

How soon will I see the results?

You will see subtle improvements after just one treatment. However, 3-5 treatments might be recommended depending on your concerns, end goals, and skin assessment. We recommend repeating treatments every 4-6 weeks. However, collagen synthesis takes time, and your skin will continue improving over the next six months, especially when a great skincare regimen is followed at home. For scalp treatments, significant improvement is usually seen after two treatments.

What should I do before my treatment?

• Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen daily for at least two weeks before treatment.
• Avoid topical irritant agents for one week before treatment.
• Avoid taking blood thinning medications for one week before your treatment if medically permitted by your physician.
• Arrive at your appointment with a clean face and no makeup.
• If your scalp is being treated, wash the hair on the same day or the night before the appointment. 

What should I expect during my treatment?

• All your questions and concerns will be addressed.
• We will ensure you are comfortable and your privacy is protected.
• Your skin will be cleansed with a medical-grade antiseptic, and then the numbing cream will be applied for approximately 25 minutes.
• After removing numbing cream, your skin will be disinfected with alcohol. Then, your practitioner will inject PRF or apply it onto the skin before, during, and after the microneedling.
• For scalp treatment, your skin will be disinfected before beginning the procedure. In addition, your provider might give you a handheld device to hold close to the injection sites as a distraction and to make the process easy and comfortable.

What should I expect after my treatment?

• Depending on the type of treatment, the procedure might be completed by placing an Oxygen dome or LED light over the treatment area.
• Your skin might look reddened and feel tight and tender to touch for 1-3 days after the procedure.
• Your provider will review post-procedure instructions and give you a copy to take home.
